I was an out-of-shape, overweight senior when I met Tom Knox. My goal was to hike up Mount Kilimanjaro (19,360 feet) with my son, so I knew I needed help!!  Tom was the perfect trainer for me. I’m a nurse with a  background in physiology, so I needed someone who knew more than I do, to answer all my questions about exercise and fitness. That was Tom! He is knowledgeable. He is up to date on all the current theories. But more importantly, he is able to push me without yelling at me, and got me to work harder than I’d ever do on my own.  And equally important, he practices what he preaches, so he’s full of ideas about how to combine my love of hiking with my strength training. On the days I wasn’t with him in the gym, I was hiking on the Oak Ridges Moraine, or going up and down the “99 steps” in Thornton Bales park, or up and down Blue Mountain in Collingwood, all at his suggestion.  He assessed me, found my weaknesses and helped me to strengthen the muscles I’d need for a long, continuous hike up the mountain over uneven terrain. A bonus is the fact that he’s a Certified Athletic Therapist, so he was also able to treat and advise me any time I overdid it and strained anything on a hike (which isn’t hard to do at age 66!) As  result, I was able to shed 30 pounds of fat, gain 4 pounds of muscle, and get to the top of Kilimanjaro in September 2011 with my son. And surprisingly, I didn’t find it as difficult as I’d anticipated! I’d highly recommend Tom for anyone who is wanting to get in better shape. Don’t let his mild manner fool you – he’s a tough task master when he has to be, but he does it with the utmost respect and patience. He’s the best!
